Basine Clerget
Illusions perduesBasine Clerget is an employer of women who iron fine linen and an unwittingly important figure in the plot against David Séchard. David is concealed in a room at her establishment, and the routines of her business provide cover for a forged letter that draws him toward danger. The evidence shows how her premises are used, but does not say whether she knows what is happening there.
Work and Household
Basine Clerget had succeeded Madame Prieur, whose establishment had taken in young women as apprentices and supervised their training in washing and ironing fine linen. Henriette Signol worked among Basine’s ironers. The details place Basine within the local network of women’s domestic-service work: she employed workers whose skills could prepare them for service as chambermaids.
David Séchard’s Hiding Place
While evading arrest, David Séchard hid in the cabinet de toilette at Basine Clerget’s. Cérizet learned where he was concealed and passed the secret to Henriette, identifying Basine’s premises as the place where David could be found. The room that sheltered him thus became a vulnerability, although the account does not attribute the disclosure to Basine herself.
The Forged Letter
The trap used the ordinary passage of laundry through Basine’s establishment as cover. Marion brought a letter for Basine under the pretext that Lucien de Rubempré’s shirts needed washing. Cérizet then arranged for Henriette to tell Basine that Madame Séchard urgently wanted her, wait until Basine had left, and carry a forged letter from Lucien to David in the cabinet. The plan depended on access to David’s hiding place and on a plausible interruption to Basine’s routine; no evidence confirms that Basine knew the letter was false or that her premises were being used in the scheme.
Narrative Role
Basine is presented chiefly through the work and space associated with her establishment, rather than through her own actions or point of view. Her ironers’ employment connects the household to Cérizet’s manipulation of Henriette, while David’s concealment there gives the location a decisive role in the attempt to capture him. Basine’s limited presence sharpens the contrast between an ordinary workplace and the covert plotting conducted within it.
